Chapter 19
When they eventually made it out of the shower, dressed and went downstairs, Cord and Ben found that the others were awake and already in the kitchen. Cord kissed the top of Ben’s head and made a direct line to the coffee pot. Ben paused next to the island and took a seat beside Robert. He grinned when Robert affectionately bumped his shoulder with his own.
Ben smiled at Mrs. Lukity, noticing that she was cooking and that she had enlisted Branden to help her. When his eyes locked with his brother’s, he saw the questioning look Branden cast his way. Ben’s brow furrowed as he wondered what was on Branden’s mind. He didn’t know his brother well enough to understand what his unspoken inquiry meant.
Ben looked away instead and asked Robert if he could use his phone. His had gone dead three days ago, and he had no charger to get it going again. Robert handed his phone over without pause and continued to read the news on his laptop.
Ben stepped out of the kitchen into the adjoining dining room and he took the card Coach Harrison had given him out of his wallet. Ben called the doctor’s office and listened as he was connected to a receptionist. Once he explained who he was and the purpose of his call, he was told to come in as soon as possible, and that Dr. Lambert would work him in. Ben thanked the lady and ended the call. When he looked up, Branden was standing just inside the doorway.
“Ben, can I talk to you for a minute?” he asked, looking slightly uncomfortable as he voiced his request.
“Sure.” Ben nodded and gestured to the table. They took chairs side by side and Ben waited to see what was going on with his brother. It took Branden a few minutes, but finally, he cleared his throat and turned Ben’s way.
“Listen, I don’t want to say the wrong thing here, and I know it’s not really my place. I mean, I haven’t done much in the way of being a big brother to you for a long time.” Branden gave a derisive snort as he thought about the truth in that statement. “Hell, I’ve never been.”
Ben reached out and placed his hands atop Branden’s, where they sat knotted on his lap. “It’s okay for you to talk to me. I want you to, remember? So go ahead,” he encouraged him.
Branden shifted in his chair and his eyes flickered briefly to the open doorway. Seeing no one there, he looked back at Ben and took the plunge.
“Do you think you and Cord are moving too fast here, Ben? I mean, I know you like him, and he more than likes you, but… Did you two sleep together last night?” He ground his teeth together, nervous about the answer he’d hear as much as the question he’d voiced aloud.
Ben chuckled and nodded. “We did sleep together.” He saw a pained look enter his brother’s eyes. He couldn’t help it; Ben had to laugh a little more.
